Another Scientific Article by a UFAZ Graduate Published in a Prestigious Q1 Indexed Journal

A new scientific article co-authored by Rashad Abbasov, a graduate of the Master’s program in Geosciences at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) and the head of the Oil and Gas Geology program at the SABAH Center of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), has been published in the high-impact, Q1-ranked journal Hydrogeology Journal.

The research paper, titled “Modeling Seawater Intrusion with Multiple Sources of Uncertainty: Application to Kuwait City,” analyzes various potential uncertainties in models that predict the intrusion of seawater into coastal groundwater. Using advanced analysis techniques, the authors propose a practical method that identifies the most critical factors influencing this process and provides faster results.

The primary innovation of this research is the presentation of a method to jointly and systematically manage uncertainties in hydrogeological models established for coastal areas. By utilizing sensitivity analysis methods, the researchers were able to select the most significant factors among numerous variables affecting groundwater salinization. Compared to traditional models, this approach requires less time and fewer resources. It presents the results in a simpler, clearer, and more practical manner for decision makers.

Analyses conducted for Kuwait City show that the process of seawater intrusion into fresh groundwater layers is highly sensitive even to small changes in input parameters. This means that under conditions of climate change and intensive water use, uncertainty must be strictly taken into account for sustainable water management in coastal regions. The approach presented in the article serves as an important scientific basis for strategic planning aimed at protecting the quality of groundwater resources and preventing salinization.
