New ICP-MS System Installed at UFAZ-ASOIU Laboratory
A significant technological upgrade has been implemented at the joint analytical laboratory of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) and the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU). The installation of the new Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) system was successfully completed with the expertise of Mr. Hugues Paucot, an ICP-MS specialist, member of CEFOSCIA, and invited professor at UFAZ.
This high-precision instrument enables the detection and quantification of trace elements at extremely low concentrations. The technology plays a pivotal role in environmental monitoring, water quality assessment, energy and materials research, and geochemical studies. Beyond enhancing the technical infrastructure, this installation strategically strengthens UFAZ’s Master’s program in Water Resources and Management and further deepens the ongoing cooperation with the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ASWRA). As a reminder, as part of this cooperation, a broad-based panel discussion on water resources management in Azerbaijan was previously held at UFAZ.
The new equipment will soon be integrated into doctoral research projects and will serve as a cornerstone for the practical training and research activities of Master’s students in Water Resources and Management.
The university’s core objective is to drive the acquisition of cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure through active research programs. This advanced technical foundation directly shapes the content of teaching and practical sessions to meet the demands of modern science. Consequently, Master’s students move beyond theoretical knowledge, evolving into highly skilled professionals through direct exposure to realworld research challenges and complex scientific problems. This process also reinforces strategic partnerships with public agencies and private sector stakeholders.
In the coming phase, specialized training sessions for laboratory staff are scheduled to begin shortly. In parallel, the final installation of the Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) system is underway. The LC-MS system will further expand the laboratory’s analytical capabilities, particularly in the separation and identification of complex organic molecules, water contaminants, and environmental pollutants.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr.Hugues Paucot and Mr. Maxime Florent, as well as the UFAZ laboratory assistants and technical staff, for their professionalism and commitment throughout this successful installation process.
