Research Seminar on Structural Geology Held at UFAZ

On October 29, the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) hosted a research seminar titled “Distributed Faulting and Fault Growth in Stratigraphic Multilayers: The Challenges of Interpretation Uncertainty and Bias”, delivered by Robert Butler, Emeritus Professor at the University of Aberdeen.

The seminar focused on the uncertainties involved in studying and interpreting subsurface structures in geologically complex areas. Robert Butler discussed how the quality of seismic images affects the accuracy of geological interpretations and examined the limitations of theoretical models used to analyse fault and fold systems. Drawing on examples from the Canadian Cordillera foothills, the Andes and the Jura, he explained how different interpretations and potential biases can influence our understanding of geological structures.

The speaker also addressed the use of approaches developed in the oil and gas industry for assessing subsurface structures in geological storage projects. He highlighted the importance of properly evaluating uncertainty and managing risks in such projects. He also emphasised that considering different geological interpretations is essential for reaching more reliable conclusions.

The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, during which participants had the opportunity to ask questions and exchange views. A gift was presented to the participant who provided the most comprehensive answer to a question posed by the speaker. The event was followed by a networking session, offering participants an opportunity to exchange ideas and build professional connections.
