UFAZ Alumni’s Research Findings Published as a Research Article

Research conducted as part of the Bachelor’s project by UFAZ graduates Raziya Huseynli, Kanan Muzaffarov, Farid Karimli, and Javidan Nasirli has been published in the Processes of Petrochemistry and Oil Refining Journal.

The research, titled “Synthesis and Characterization of Biodegradable Polymers from Corn and Potato Starch,” was conducted with the academic guidance and support of Assoc. Prof. Dunya Babanly and Maxime Florent, UFAZ Chemistry lecturers and coordinators.

The study focuses on the development of biodegradable polymer materials from corn and potato starch and examines their various properties. The students analysed the structure and properties of the materials using FTIR analysis, tensile strength, water absorption, and biodegradability tests.

One of the interesting aspects of the project was the opportunity to observe how different formulations affect the properties of the materials in practice. The researchers found that varying the amounts of glycerol and calcium carbonate affected the flexibility and rigidity of the films, while the samples produced from potato and corn starch also demonstrated different characteristics.

The study also examined the biodegradation of the materials in soil. After two weeks, visible fungal growth was observed on the samples, providing an indication of the biodegradation potential of the starch-based materials.
