“Cotutelle" PhD Student at UFAZ Delivered a Presentation at the EGU25 Scientific Conference

The European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2025 (#EGU25) was held in Vienna and marked a major success. The scientific event welcomed over 18,000 in-person participants from 120 countries, along with more than 2,000 online attendees from 104 countries. In total, 18,934 scientific presentations were delivered across 1,102 sessions. Impressively, 56% of these contributions came from early career researchers, highlighting the strong engagement of young scientists.

At the conference, which saw strong participation from young researchers, Kamal Bayramov - a PhD student in Rock Mechanics under the 'Cotutelle' program at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) - stood out with his oral presentation. He spoke during the session titled “Faults and fractures in geoenergy applications: Monitoring, laboratory, field work and modelling results”, where he presented the findings of his research.

His presentation, titled “The Impact of Pore Geometry and Orientation on Permeability Evolution and Compaction Band Formation in Volcanic Rocks”, attracted significant interest. The study focuses on how the shape and orientation of microscopic pores within rocks influence fluid movement and rock deformation under pressure - an important insight for geoenergy and subsurface engineering.

Additionally, the collaborative work “Compaction and Permeability Evolution of Tuffs From Krafla Volcano (Iceland)”, which Kamal co-authored, was selected for an honored 20-minute talk, presented by Professor Michael Heap. The selection of this research for such a spotlight further underlines its scientific quality and relevance.

We extend our sincere congratulations to Kamal Bayramov for this major milestone in his academic career and wish him continued success in his future research!

As a reminder, prior to the #EGU25 General Assembly in Vienna, Kamal Bayramov was also awarded the “Best Poster Award” at the 2025 PhD Congress in Strasbourg, where he presented his PhD research.
