UFAZ Faculty Member’s Research Article Published in a Prestigious International Journal
A research article co-authored by Gulnaz Gahramanova, a Physics teacher at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), entitled “In Vivo Nb₄C₃Tₓ MXene-Assisted Photothermal Therapy of Melanoma in Mice,” has been published in Advanced NanoBiomed Research, a journal ranked Q1 according to Scopus/SCImago and Q2 according to Web of Science/JCR.
The study investigates the potential application of Nb₄C₃Tₓ MXene, a nanomaterial, in photothermal therapy, an emerging approach to cancer treatment. MXenes are a class of ultrathin, two-dimensional nanomaterials primarily known for their potential applications in energy storage and electronics. In recent years, their biomedical applications have also been increasingly investigated, including their use in photothermal therapy aimed at destroying cancer cells.
As part of the study, Nb₄C₃Tₓ MXene was tested using both laboratory-based experiments and a melanoma model in mice. The researchers applied the nanomaterial in combination with pulsed laser irradiation at a wavelength of 1064 nanometres. In this process, the MXene converts laser energy into heat, increasing the temperature in the tumour region and thereby contributing to the damage of cancer cells.
The results demonstrated that the combined application of Nb₄C₃Tₓ MXene and laser therapy significantly inhibited melanoma tumour growth and resulted in extensive destruction of cancer cells.
The findings demonstrate the potential of Nb₄C₃Tₓ MXene as a promising and safe platform for photothermal therapy. The results provide an important basis for further research into the application of this nanomaterial in cancer treatment. The researchers plan to further investigate MXene-based approaches to enhance therapeutic efficacy and expand their potential biomedical applications.
