Kamal Bayramov, a graduate of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), has successfully defended his doctoral research at the University of Strasbourg (Unistra) and earned a PhD degree.

Kamal Bayramov completed his research under the joint Cotutelle doctoral programme of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) and Unistra. His research, conducted at the École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre (EOST) at the University of Strasbourg, focused on “Compaction Localisation in Volcanic Rocks”.

His doctoral thesis explored the mechanical behaviour of volcanic rocks. The research is relevant to understanding volcanic outgassing, the stability of volcanic edifices, and the performance of geothermal reservoirs.

Through laboratory experiments, the study examined how the preferred orientation of pores affects the formation of compaction bands and rock permeability, how compaction develops over time in volcanic rocks, and how compaction bands form and evolve. Using synchrotron X-ray imaging, the study captured the nucleation and propagation of a compaction band in a volcanic rock in real time for the first time.

The findings showed that pore shape and orientation influence the direction of compaction bands and shed light on the characteristics of time-dependent compaction processes. The research contributes to a more quantitative understanding of the mechanisms underlying compaction localisation in volcanic rocks.

We congratulate Dr. Kamal Bayramov on this important academic achievement and wish him every success in his future research and professional endeavours!
