UFAZ Graduate’s Research Paper Published in a Prestigious Q1 Journal in Geology

kamal paper q1 2026

A research paper by Kamal Bayramov, a graduate of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) and a joint PhD candidate of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) and the University of Strasbourg (Unistra) under the Cotutelle doctoral programme, specializing in Rock Mechanics, has been published in the Journal of Structural Geology, one of the world's leading scientific journals in the field of geology.

The paper, entitled “The Control of Pore Geometry and Orientation on Compaction Localization in Triaxially Deformed Porous Lava,” investigates how porous volcanic rocks deform under compression. The study focuses on determining how the geometry and orientation of pores influence the mechanical behaviour of these rocks.

As part of the research, triaxial compression experiments were conducted on porous lava samples. The findings demonstrate that different pore orientations have a direct impact on the rocks’ strength, deformation mechanisms, and the development of compaction bands.

The results provide new insights into the mechanical behaviour of volcanic rocks. They also have important implications for assessing volcanic stability, understanding fluid and gas transport within rocks, and modelling deformation processes in porous geomaterials.

Furthermore, the study provides new experimental evidence on the relationship between pore geometry, pore orientation, and rock strength in the fields of rock mechanics and structural geology. As such, it represents a valuable contribution to ongoing research in these disciplines.
