UFAZ Students Develop Their Practical Skills During Geological Fieldwork
Second-year students of the Geology, Geosciences and Georesources program at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) took part in a fieldwork program aimed at strengthening their theoretical knowledge through practical experience and developing their geological field skills.
The fieldwork was led by Geoscience Associate Professor Lucas Bofill, Geophysics Program Coordinator Arzu Aliyeva, and Oil and Gas Program Coordinator Fidan Aslanzada. It gave students the opportunity to make observations in real geological settings and apply the knowledge they had gained in the classroom.
During the fieldwork, students developed essential field skills, including site orientation, the proper use of basic geological tools such as a compass, geological compass, hand lens and HCl, as well as rock observation and outcrop sketching.
In the Sitalchay village area along the Caspian coast, students observed different depositional environments and geological formations, learning to distinguish between sedimentary rock groups and understand the processes behind their formation. They also examined progradation and retrogradation processes in sediment formation, as well as deltaic environments.
Another stop during the fieldwork was the Candy Cane area along the Khizi road. There, students explored the formation of deep-marine environments and observed deformation processes resulting from the collision of the African-Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
