UFAZ Students Participated in Geological Fieldwork in the Greater Caucasus
From May 12 to 18, L2 students of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) took part in a geological fieldwork in the Greater Caucasus region. The fieldwork was supervised by Quentin Boesch, together with UFAZ staff members Lucas Bofill, Arzu Aliyeva, and Fidan Aslanzade.
The main objective of the fieldwork was to teach students how to reconstruct the geological history of various geological sections in the Caucasus using key geological tools and methods. Throughout the programme, students enhanced their practical skills by working with hand lenses, geological compasses, hardness tests, Jacob’s staffs, stratigraphic columns, and geological mapping techniques. During the fieldwork, students examined different rock outcrops, identified rock types, analysed their depositional environments and geological ages, and described visible structural deformations. By comparing observations collected from different locations, they established connections between the outcrops and worked to reconstruct the major stages of the geological evolution of the Greater Caucasus.
This hands-on experience significantly contributed to the development of students’ fieldwork skills and deepened their understanding of the geological structure and evolution of the region.
