UFAZ Students Participated in Reservoir Geology Fieldwork
Petroleum Engineering & Reservoir Geology students ay French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) successfully completed an intensive 5-day reservoir geology fieldwork campaign. This field program was fully dedicated to detailed practical work on Azerbaijan’s major reservoir and source rock systems of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic stratigraphic framework.
Throughout these 5 days, students studied key outcrops that illustrate the South Caspian Basin region's complex sedimentary architecture. The visited locations included the following:
- The Melhem section on Shamakha road,
- The Altigach-Khizi road sections,
- Perekeshkul and Islamdag sections,
- The Kirmaki and Yasamal valleys, which provide excellent exposures of source and reservoir intervals.
The fieldwork was delivered by Dr. Guilherme Bozetti, Dr. Lucas Bofill and Fidan Aslanzade.
During the fieldwork, students gained hands-on practical experience observing different types of reservoirs, ranging from carbonated sandstones and mudstones to clastic sandstones and mudstones. This direct exposure allowed them to recognize lithological variations, textural differences, and depositional characteristics across diverse reservoir units.
In addition to field observation, students developed essential practical skills, including:
- Drawing geological sketches to document outcrop features and lateral variations,
- Sedimentary logging to record vertical successions and interpret depositional environments,
- Structural measurements of beds, such as strike, dip angle, and bedding orientation,
- Structural analysis of deformation features and their relation to reservoir geometry,
- Compilation of geological reports synthesizing field observations, interpretations, and data collected.
