UFAZ Teacher Coordinated Project Presented at Prestigious International Science Fair in the USA
A project coordinated and mentored by UFAZ chemistry teacher Samir Karimov was successfully presented at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF 2026) held in the United States, achieving significant international recognition.
The competition, considered one of the world’s most prestigious science and engineering fairs, took place on May 9–15 in Phoenix, Arizona, bringing together talented young researchers from across the globe.
Students Banu Ibrahimova and Mikayil Ahmadbayli from Secondary School-Lyceum No. 6 named after Tofig Ismayilov in Baku were awarded a bronze medal for their project titled “An AI-Controlled Underwater Floating Robot for Photochemical Treatment of Cyanide-Contaminated Industrial Wastewaters.”
The project focused on the development of an AI-assisted floating robotic system designed for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Using UV-photochemical technologies, the research explored the degradation and neutralization of cyanide-based and other hazardous industrial pollutants in contaminated water.
The developed robotic system is equipped with specialized sensors capable of monitoring water temperature, pH level, conductivity, and pollution indicators in real time. Through UV-based oxidation processes, the system enables harmful contaminants to be transformed into safer compounds. Research findings demonstrated a significant reduction in pollutant concentrations in model contaminated waters.
The project stood out for both its innovative technological approach and its contribution to environmental sustainability. The proposed system is considered a promising solution for future industrial wastewater treatment applications.
The scientific coordination and mentorship of the project were carried out by Samir Karimov, chemistry teacher at UFAZ. The research activities were supported by UFAZ laboratory facilities and analytical instrumentation.
It is worth noting that the project had previously received recognition at several national and international competitions, highlighting its scientific quality, innovative potential, and practical relevance.
UFAZ congratulates Samir Karimov and the participating students on this remarkable achievement and wishes them continued success in their future scientific endeavors.
