A research article co-authored by Samir Karimov, a Chemistry lecturer at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), entitled "Transformation of p,p′–DDT in ethanol under ionizing radiation: Mechanistic and qualitative characterization by GC-MS" has been published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, one of the world's leading scientific journals. Recognized as one of the most prestigious publications in the fields of environmental science, environmental engineering, and hazardous materials research, the journal is ranked in the Q1 category and has a current impact factor of 10.6.

The study investigates the transformation of the persistent pesticide p,p′-DDT, which poses significant risks to living organisms and ecosystems due to its long-term persistence in the environment, through gamma irradiation in ethanol. The researchers demonstrated that more than 99.99% of DDT can be degraded without the use of additional chemical reagents. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the team identified the resulting transformation products, proposed the underlying reaction mechanism, and showed that the process leads to a significant reduction in toxicity. The findings highlight a promising and environmentally friendly approach for the remediation of persistent organic pollutants.

This publication is the outcome of research conducted within the framework of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) – Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) Joint Research Program on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program aims to develop innovative and sustainable technologies for environmental protection and pollution remediation.

We congratulate Samir Karimov on this remarkable scientific achievement and wish him continued success in his future research endeavors.
