UFAZ Teacher's Scientific Article Published in Q2-Ranked SOCAR Proceedings Journal
The article titled “Assessing Carbonate Impact on Reservoir Properties in the Oligocene-Miocene South Caspian Basin,” co-authored by Fidan Aslanzade, the Oil and Gas Engineering Program Coordinator at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), has been published in the prestigious journal SOCAR Proceedings. Positioned in the Q2 category of the Scopus international indexing system, the journal is recognized as one of the most reputable scientific publications in the region's oil and gas industry and applied geology.
The research investigates the influence of carbonate content on reservoir quality within the Oligocene-Miocene sediments of the South Caspian Basin. During the study, the authors conducted petrophysical analyses using well data and various samples. The impact of carbonate minerals on formation porosity and permeability was established through mathematical and geological modeling.
The primary scientific innovation of this research lies in revealing how calcite and other carbonate cements alter the filtration-capacity properties of the reservoir. The authors determined the extent to which these cements limit permeability or, in certain cases, enhance quality by creating secondary porosity.
The results of the research allow for more accurate forecasting of the hydrocarbon potential of promising structures in the South Caspian Basin. Proper assessment of carbonate impact minimizes risks that may arise during drilling and well completion processes. This factor is of great importance for both the safety and economic efficiency of projects.
