UFAZ to Hold Research Seminar on Sodium Silicate Coatings for Hydrogen Barrier Applications

On September 16, the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) will host its next research seminar dedicated to scientific research in the fields of materials science and hydrogen technologies.

During the seminar, Nuraddin Huseynov will present his research findings on “Development of Commercial Sodium Silicate Coatings on Steel for Hydrogen Barrier Applications.”

The study investigates the application and curing of a commercial sodium silicate solution on steel surfaces, with a focus on identifying suitable processing conditions to ensure good coating adhesion, uniform surface coverage, and coating integrity.

As part of the study, different coating application and curing methods were compared. The results showed that furnace curing could lead to visible surface defects, including shrinkage lines and cracks, while these defects were not observed with air curing. Air bubbles introduced during brush application were eliminated through the use of the dip coating method. The combination of dip coating and air curing was therefore identified as a promising approach for producing more uniform and defect-free sodium silicate coatings.

It is worth noting that Nuraddin Huseynov holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from UFAZ and a master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. He is currently pursuing his PhD in the same field at the University of Sheffield.

His research focuses on hydrogen technologies, particularly hydrogen–metal interactions, hydrogen permeation through metals, and the development of cost-effective protective coatings to reduce hydrogen embrittlement.
