UFAZ will Host Research Seminar on Modeling Rainfall-Induced Landslides
About event
On November 27, the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) will hold a research seminar titled “From Physics to Forecast: Modeling Rainfall-Induced Landslides.” The seminar will be presented by Dr. Rashad Abbasov, UFAZ alumnus and PhD holder in Geophysics from the University of Strasbourg.
Dr. Abbasov completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr. Marwan Fahs and Dr. Renaud Toussaint. His research focuses on the hydro-mechanical modeling of rainfall-triggered landslides. The project was funded within the State Program on Increasing the International Competitiveness of the Higher Education System in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019-2023. His work covers topics such as assessing uncertainties in models, understanding the impact of simplifications, and analyzing the role of surface tension.
Before his PhD studies, Rashad Abbasov earned a master’s degree in Geosciences with distinction from UFAZ and a bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering with honors from the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University. He was awarded several prestigious scholarships, including the Khoshbakht Yusifzade, Akif Alizade, and SOCAR internal scholarships. He is currently working as the coordinator and teacher of the Oil and Gas Geology program at the SABAH Center of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University.
During the seminar, Dr. Abbasov will explain how fluid flow and mechanical processes in soil are modeled together. He will also show how these advanced models help improve the accuracy of predicting landslides.
