Suleyman Ismayilov, a Geosciences and Geophysical Engineering alumnus of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), has published his latest research in the prestigious Geosciences (MDPI) journal. Currently serving as a Geotechnical Engineer at Anglo Asian Mining PLC, Ismayilov completed his Master’s degree in Mining and Geology at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WUST) in Poland.

The article focuses on the design of tunnel support systems at the Gilar underground mine, located in the Gedabek district of Azerbaijan. The research conducted a comparative analysis of two different methods to ensure the stability of underground excavations:

  • Empirical Method (Q-system): A practical approach developed by Barton, based on rock mass classification.
  • Numerical Modeling (FEM): Simulation of stress distribution and deformations using the RS2 software via the Finite Element Method (FEM).

The study revealed that while the traditional Q-system allows for rapid selection, it may sometimes underestimate reinforcement requirements, particularly in highly fractured or low-strength zones.

In the paper, the authors propose a hybrid approach involving the joint application of empirical classification methods and numerical verification systems. This significantly enhances the long-term stability of underground tunnels. Through numerical modeling, parameters such as rockbolt spacing and shotcrete thickness were calculated more accurately, optimizing safety factors. This methodology makes the decision-making process more reliable and precise in complex geological conditions and deep mines.

Suleyman Ismayilov developed this large-scale research with the collaboration and support of Azerbaijan International Mining Company Limited (AIMC), Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and the KGHM CUPRUM Research and Development Center.

This success is of great importance both for the application of modern engineering approaches in Azerbaijan's mining industry and for the representation of local talent in the international scientific arena.
