Sarvar Mammadov, a graduate of the “Geosciences and Geophysical Engineering” bachelor’s program and the “Geosciences” master’s program at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), has achieved a major success at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) 2025 General Assembly. His research titled “Permeability of Oolitic Limestones from the Upper Rhine Graben” earned him both the Early Career Scientist Travel Support (ECSTS) and the Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPP).

Sarvar Mammadov is currently pursuing his PhD at the Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (ITES). He works in the Geophysics and Process Imaging team under the supervision of Professor Patrick Baud. His research focuses on the physical and mechanical properties of porous rocks, applications of digital rock physics, experimental geophysics, and the behavior of layers relevant for geothermal energy.

In his award-winning research, Sarvar Mammadov studied the deformation and permeability changes of limestones from the Grande Oolithe Formation under different effective pressures. The study aims to understand how rocks behave when transitioning from brittle to compacting regimes and to identify the main factors controlling fluid flow in geothermal energy projects. The results provide important insights into the role of carbonate rocks in the development of geothermal resources.

This work, presented in the EGU session “Petrophysics and Geomechanics for the Energy Transition”, has been highly recognized internationally and serves as a strong motivation for this young researcher.
