UFAZ Hosted a Research Seminar on the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health
On November 14, the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) hosted a research seminar titled “Rethinking AI-Driven Mental Health: From the Formal Definition to Explainability-First Modelling.” The seminar was delivered by UFAZ alumnus Dr. Yusif Ibrahimov, who recently completed his PhD at the University of York (UoY).
During the session, Yusif Ibrahimov presented his research on the responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence in mental health assessment. He highlighted the widely known “black box” problem – the difficulty of understanding how AI models make decisions and why they produce certain results.
To address this challenge, Dr. Ibrahimov introduced a new theoretical framework tailored to mental health and showcased his innovative model, MentalXAI. By integrating domain-specific knowledge bases into the AI model, MentalXAI provides clearer, well-grounded, and context-specific explanations for its outputs.
Participants had the opportunity to observe how MentalXAI enhances both the accuracy and explainability of detecting stress, depression, and suicidal ideation. The strong alignment of the model’s outcomes with psychological and psycholinguistic insights further demonstrated the significance of this research.
The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, during which Yusif Ibrahimov answered participants’ questions.
