UFAZ Master’s Students Take Part in Geological Fieldwork in the Girdiman River Valley
Final-year students of the Geosciences Master’s program at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) took part in geological fieldwork in the Girdiman River Valley.
The fieldwork was led by Associate Professor Guilherme Bozetti from the University of Strasbourg (Unistra), Associate Professor T. C. from Bordeaux University, and Fidan Aslanzada, UFAZ’s Oil and Gas Program Coordinator.
The program covered a range of fields, including mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, depositional environments, structural geology, geodynamics, basin analysis, and plate tectonics. Students also had the opportunity to gain a first-hand understanding of different stages in the geodynamic evolution of Azerbaijan’s geological structure.
Over the five-day fieldwork, students examined the formation and evolution of Mesozoic deep-marine systems, as well as the Paleogene rocks overlying them. They studied the structural features affecting these rocks, their interaction with structural displacement, and their relationship to the geodynamic evolution of the Paleo-Caspian Basin from the Cretaceous to the Paleogene.
During the fieldwork, students observed different geological sections and stratifications, prepared sketches, developed sedimentological logs, measured structural elements, and carried out detailed descriptions of the rocks.
Alongside the intensive fieldwork, students attended lectures and completed practical tasks. This allowed them to connect their field observations with their theoretical knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of geological processes.
