UFAZ Students Participated in a Field Trip to the Kirmaki Valley

On October 23-24, members of the Earth Science Department of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) organized a field trip for students to the Kirmaki Valley. Under the supervision of Dr. Guilherme Bozetti and with the support of UFAZ lecturers Dr. Lucas Bofill, Fidan Aslanzade, and Arzu Aliyeva, 4th-year students of the Geology, Geophysics, and Georesources program and 3rd-year students of the Petroleum Engineering & Reservoir Geology program gained valuable practical experience.

The fieldwork in the Kirmaki Valley was dedicated to studying how sedimentary rocks are formed. Students first described rock facies, meaning the natural conditions and environments where the rocks were originally formed. They then created sedimentary logs, graphically recording the sequence and characteristics of the rock layers they observed. In addition, they identified sedimentary features and carried out stratigraphic measurements to determine the thickness and orientation of the layers. The students also analyzed sedimentary structures, such as natural traces formed by the action of water or wind. Through these observations, they learned how to reconstruct ancient depositional environments and gained a deeper understanding of the Earth’s crust and geological processes.

Throughout the fieldwork, the lecturers actively supported students during practical exercises, guided their teamwork, and provided explanations during on-site measurements and observations. The field trip offered students a valuable opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real geological settings and to strengthen their rock observation and analysis skills.
