Brief description of UFAZ: UFAZ is an ambitious project initiated by the Presidents of the French Republic and the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2014. It is administered by the historic university of Azerbaijan - the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) from the Azerbaijani side and the prestigious University of Strasbourg (Unistra) from the French side.
UFAZ delivers 2 national diplomas (French and Azerbaijani) at the Bachelor level in the following specialties: Computer Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Geophysics, Oil and Gas engineering. And at the Master level in the following specialties: Data Science and artificial intelligence, Physical chemistry/Chemical engineering, Geosciences, Water Resources and Management. Tuition language is English.
Position description:
Position name: Laboratory Assistant in Chemical Engineering
Type of contract: Full-Time
Position in the organizational structure: Attached to Education department of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), under the supervision of the Chemistry Teacher Coordinator of UFAZ.
Starting date: September 2025
Responsibilities
- Prepare chemical solutions and ensure all laboratory tools and equipment are cleaned, maintained, and in safe working condition;
- Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked with chemicals, glassware, and consumables, and maintain accurate inventory records;
- Follow and enforce strict safety protocols during all laboratory operations, including proper handling, labeling, and storage of chemicals;
- Prepare laboratory setups and materials ahead of scheduled sessions in coordination with academic staff;
- Provide support to the laboratory instructor during the entire duration of lab classes, including setup, student assistance, and troubleshooting equipment issues;
- Clean and store laboratory materials and equipment after each session to ensure readiness for the next use;
- Assist in the annual ordering and restocking of chemicals, materials, and teaching aids;
- Maintain and update the inventory system for all laboratory supplies and materials regularly;
- Support the training and onboarding of new laboratory assistants;
- Research and recommend proper procedures for the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of chemical waste;
- Accurately record preparation procedures, chemical logs, and usage in laboratory documentation systems;
- Maintain and organize the chemical engineering teaching storeroom to facilitate efficient preparation and transition between experiments;
- Keep up-to-date records of equipment testing, calibration, and maintenance schedules to ensure functionality and compliance;
- Assist academic and technical staff in sourcing, purchasing, and managing materials, consumables, and lab equipment for teaching purposes.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Chemistry (minimum requirement) with a high academic average and/or honors/distinctions;
- Excellent command of English – applicants must be able to communicate and assist in laboratory instruction in English (Chemistry context);
- Proficiency in office software tools (Microsoft Office and LibreOffice), and any software relevant to chemistry or laboratory management;
- Strong commitment to high-quality education and fostering a positive, inclusive, and professional learning environment, in line with French academic standards;
- International laboratory experience in academic research or the chemical industry is considered an advantage.
