Computer Science Research Group

The AIDT Laboratory at UFAZ is structured around several complementary research directions that combine methodological innovation with practical applications of high societal and industrial relevance.

The first major research direction is dedicated to Evolutionary Algorithms, which are optimization methods inspired by natural evolution. Researchers in this area develop adaptive computational models based on mechanisms such as selection, mutation, and recombination to address complex problems that cannot be efficiently solved using traditional methods. This research contributes to the development of robust and scalable optimization tools applicable in fields such as engineering, logistics, and data analytics.

The second research line focuses on Machine Learning and Data Mining and encompasses the development of intelligent algorithms and data-driven approaches for real-world applications. Ongoing projects explore the use of artificial intelligence in tasks such as medical diagnostics, infrastructure quality assessment, and the analysis of complex systems. Particular emphasis is placed on extracting meaningful features from heterogeneous datasets and on designing models that ensure accuracy, efficiency, and interpretability.

The third research line reflects a recently established direction within the laboratory dedicated to Explainable and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, underscoring the department’s commitment to responsible and transparent AI principles. The objective is to develop models whose decision-making processes are understandable, verifiable, and trustworthy for humans. Initial outcomes include prototype systems capable of explaining automated decisions, as well as frameworks for assessing the reliability and ethical compliance of AI components. This research line aims to combine high-performance machine learning with accountability and transparency, while reinforcing UFAZ’s active contribution to the advancement of responsible AI technologies.

Together, these research directions illustrate UFAZ’s strategic vision in computer science: advancing fundamental methods in artificial intelligence and computational optimization, while ensuring that their applications remain ethical, reliable, and beneficial to society.
