Earth Sciences and Environment Research Group

The team's research activities focus on major issues in international Earth science research, namely the distribution of natural resources, the impact of climate change on the nature and quality of these resources, and human exposure to natural hazards. These issues are particularly relevant to Azerbaijan, which has significant natural resources but at the same time limited water resources and significant exposure to natural hazards in the Caucasus basin. In more details the research axes are:

Georesources: Oil and gas exploitation and its impact on underground fluid circulation, ore deposits in a world in energy transition, and drinking water resources in areas affected by saltwater intrusion from the Caspian Sea;

Hazards and risks: rock physics associated with oil reservoir formations, activity and stability of mud volcanoes, seismic hazards, or landslides;

Environment: Present and past hydrology regulating water resource renewal, impact of climate change and water management on the availability and quality of drinking water.
