The history of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) dates back to 1887, a period marked by the development of oil production. The institution initially operated as a technical school, and in 1920 the Polytechnic Institute was established on its foundation. Over more than a century of existence, ASOIU has operated under various names, the most well-known being the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (AII).

Throughout its history, the university has trained over 100,000 highly qualified professionals for more than 100 countries worldwide. In order to open a new chapter in its distinguished history, the institution was renamed the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University in 2015.

The main mission of ASOIU is to contribute to human capital development by training professionals with high potential for both local and international labor markets, particularly in a period of rapid economic and industrial growth, and to achieve a productive integration of science, education, research, innovation, and industry.

ASOIU is also renowned as the university where the famous Nobel laureate in physics, Lev Landau, studied. Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev, as well as a number of other internationally recognized figures, also received their education at this university.
